The European Union could “act quickly and firmly” against what it calls “unjustified” travel bans imposed by the US against five Europeans involved in combating digital hatred and misinformation, an EU official has said.
European Leaders Decry US Move as ‘Coercion’
European leaders such as Emmanuel Macron accused the US administration of “coercion and intimidation”, after the travel bans were placed on individuals that were at the heart of efforts to enact laws regulating American tech companies.
“For far too long, ideologues in Europe have led organised efforts to coerce American platforms to suppress US perspectives they disagree with,” stated a senior US official online. “The current administration will no longer tolerate such actions of censorship beyond its borders.”
Broad Criticism Across Europe
Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials joined France in condemning the decision.
The bans were imposed this week on a former EU commissioner who helped draft the bloc’s digital governance law, as well as four activists fighting false information, including Germany and the United Kingdom.
