The Gaming Giant Recruits Popular Battle Royale Lead to Revitalize Struggling Action Game Ambitious Title
The renowned publisher has welcomed Ben Brinkman from Respawn Entertainment to lead the studio crew at 31st Union, which is currently working on the forthcoming third-person action-packed title known as Project Ethos.
Leadership Transition Follows Lukewarm Reception
Brinkman takes on the role of studio head at 31st Union following the departure of former leader Michael Condrey, who was reportedly let go due to Project Ethos' lackluster early showing last fall.
On Wednesday, 2K president David Ismailer updated team members about this strategic move through an internal memo, which emphasized that playtesting had shown the need for a distinct game identity.
Ismailer noted that the developers is now reimagining the project with a revised vision, aiming to address player expectations.
A Pattern of Strategic Hires
The news follows a comparable move taken by 2K Games in August, when they recruited an industry veteran from the Diablo team to work on the beloved franchise development group.
Here is the entire content from the president's announcement:
Team—
I know you all just completed your meeting - I hope you’re as enthusiastic as I am with the recent updates. Previously I sent you all a message, I mentioned the following: “I am confident in this group. You all are some of the most motivated and innovative developers we have had the pleasure to collaborate with - and we’re looking forward for that partnership to endure.”
With your dedication and versatility, especially over the past twelve months, you consistently demonstrate that.
The gamer responses from last autumn’s Project ETHOS playtest was revealing. It confirmed the promise of a action-packed game but indicated we still had improvements to make. It highlighted the necessity for a clearer brand.
It’s been inspiring to see how far you’ve advanced. You took the criticism to heart and reimagined the title with a revitalized direction - one that’s poised to deliver on its ambition to our players.
Our confidence in this project grows every day. To further the outstanding advancement you’ve made, I’m excited to introduce the new hire as the latest Director of the team. Following several months of conversations, he starts with us on the specified date.
Ben’s leadership and expertise in the competitive gaming space is considerable, having dedicated the recent years producing and managing some of the most well-known franchises in gaming, including the acclaimed shooter, and more recently, Apex Legends.
Please join me in welcoming him in the coming days. We are all looking forward to continue observing the development of the game in the time to ahead.
The President
Experience of the New Head
The appointee currently serves in the position of senior developer and head of production at the renowned studio for their flagship title. He earlier was employed at Treyarch and Activision in diverse production roles on the Call of Duty series, and, before that, had assignments at other industry leaders.
Game Information and Vision
The upcoming game was revealed in last year together with a public demo. At the time, the developers presented the title as a "no-cost, third-person perspective roguelike hero shooter and an innovative evolution on the style."
"Build your perfect run—or die trying—in this 3rd-person action shooter! Customize your character in real-time to suit your personal playstyle," the description states. "Challenge the opponents with fresh skills, risks, and tests that change every match. Do you safely extract with your collected items? Alternatively go big, risk it all, and pray your group can achieve the highest spot? The decision is up to you."
Project Ethos lacks an announced debut schedule or platforms, but fans can anticipate further news as development progresses.
