The New Mayor Vows a 'New Era' for The Big Apple in First Speech
During an first day in his new role, Zohran Mamdani vowed to “transform” the metropolis, declaring “a new era” and an bold beginning to his tenure.
An Unprecedented Leader
The young political star, who just a year ago remained a virtually unknown state assemblyman, has become the city's first mayor of South Asian descent. He additionally marked a milestone by being the first to be sworn in using the Qur'an.

The estimated $10 billion price tag of these initiatives may pose a hurdle to secure. Mamdani has vowed to tax more heavily the wealthiest New Yorkers and corporations. However, as a municipality under the authority of the state government, he will require the cooperation of Governor Kathy Hochul.
Facing External Challenges
The new mayor must contend with skepticism from some members of the Jewish community concerned about his past comments regarding Israel. Sensitivities were highlighted during the transition when a senior aide resigned over offensive past comments.
Mamdani has attempted to smooth over these concerns by persuading Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch to stay on, avoiding the appearance of losing a Jewish police chief.
On the national stage, former President Donald Trump has called Mamdani a “communist” and warned of withholding government money. Despite this, a recent meeting between the two was described as surprisingly friendly.

Traditionally, New York mayors are evaluated by their success in providing essential functions: sanitation, reducing the rodent problem, repairing roadways, and making sure reliable transit service.
Outgoing Mayor Eric Adams highlighted his administration's public safety record, pointing to record low numbers of homicides and shootings in 2025, with 301 homicides reported.
As his term begins, Mamdani and his wife will relocate from their Astoria apartment to the stately Gracie Mansion. The outgoing mayor offered a unusual piece of advice about a reputed resident spirit in the home, which reportedly only troubles those who do not act to “do right by the city.”
Mamdani ended his speech with a simple declaration: “The work has only just begun.”
